PTIN Registration Site Is Up…But Is It Running?

I received an e-mail from the IRS and two of the EA Associations I belong to announcing that the IRS site for online PTIN registration was now available. I'm sure other tax-related organizations also notified their membership.

The first thought that entered my mind is that everyone is going to try to register right away and the system won't be able to handle it. I don't think anyone at the IRS or the associations stopped to think about the outcome of over-promoting a brand new system that is almost a whole month late coming online.

Long story short, I attempted three times to enter the registration site and got timed out by my browser. I am not sure if I would attempt to register under such circumstances anyway for fear my registration might drop into a black hole.

I don't know about you, but I am going to wait awhile before making another attempt and let others be the guinea pigs. After all, we have until December 31 to register. However, don't put it off until the last minute because there will probably be a high volume of last minute registrations that could also bog the system down.
