IRS PTIN Registration Opens with PROBLEMS!
2012 PTIN Registration opened on Wednesday with "you guessed it" PROBLEMS! Already one practitioner has told us that she was assigned a new PTIN instead of the one she has been using for years. Another firm called the IRS to report problems, and after an hour on the phone the caller was told that there were hundreds of practitioners who were having problems and it would be a couple of weeks before the problems would be straightened out.
You would think after last year’s debacle that the contractor handling this for the IRS would have tested it first. Maybe we will have a new contractor next year. In the meantime, a word of wisdom:
DON’T BE IN A RUSH TO RE-REGISTER YOUR PTIN
All existing PTINs are valid through December 31, 2011, so you still have lots of time. Let the others be the guinea pigs.
