Are tax preparers cutting the deadline for the IRS competency test too close?
The early news from the IRS reports that fewer than 5,000 tax preparers have taken the competency test to date. With an expected 350,000-plus tax preparers who are eligible for the new IRS program, there appears a serious challenge to get everyone tested in time, year-end 2013.
Much of the delay seems to be in preparing for the test itself. Postings from tax preparers so far (including one of our own staff members) state that the test is not that difficult. We have prepared an IRS competency preparation overview for tax preparers. Our suggestion is to take your annual RTRP 15-hour continuing education course or your California Tax Preparer (CTEC) 20-hour continuing education course before you schedule the test. Review the preparation material and schedule early. There is no reason to stress come year-end.
